Let AI quiz you: the QUIZME line and 3 more study prompts

For ChatGPT and Claude. Paste a prompt, then answer the questions. Free.

Hi, it's Ivo. Reading an answer feels like learning. Being asked about it is what makes it stick. These 4 prompts turn the AI from the one who explains into the one who asks.

First, the honest part

QUIZME isn't a hidden ChatGPT command. It's a word you teach it once, with the line below. After that, you type QUIZME and a topic in any new chat.

ChatGPT also has its own study mode now (type @study in the message box). QUIZME is a shortcut you set up yourself: the same line goes into ChatGPT and Claude, and it asks for a score at the end.

1. The QUIZME line (set it up once)

Paste this

When I type QUIZME and a topic, don't explain the topic. Quiz me instead: one question at a time, wait for my answer, tell me if I'm right and why, then make the next question a little harder. After 5 questions, give me my score and the one thing I should review.

Where to paste it:

  1. ChatGPT on the web: Settings, then Personalization, then Custom instructions. Check that "Enable customization" is on. On the phone app it's Settings, then Customize ChatGPT. Free accounts get up to 1,500 characters there, and this line is about 260.
  2. Claude: Settings, then "Instructions for Claude". What you write there applies to all your chats.
  3. Don't want to change your settings? Paste the line at the top of a new chat. It works in that chat only.

Then try it:

2. Explain it back

Paste this

I just learned about [topic]. I'll explain it in my own words. Point out what I got wrong or left out, in plain English. Then ask me one question about my weakest part.

My explanation: [write it here]

Use it after a video, a lesson or a meeting. If you can't explain it, you found the part to learn again.

3. Spot the mistake

Paste this

Give me 3 short statements about [topic]. One of them is wrong. Let me guess which one and why, then tell me if I was right.

Use it when you think you already know a topic. It shows fast if you really do.

4. Review next week

Paste this

Write 3 questions about [topic] that I should still be able to answer next week. Show only the questions, no answers. When I paste them back with my answers, check them and tell me what to review.

Save the 3 questions in your notes. Next week, paste them back with your answers.

Three tips

Why being asked works

In 2006, psychologists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke had students either reread a text or take tests on it. On the tests days later, the students who had been tested remembered more. The ones who reread felt more confident and remembered less. Their words: "Testing is a powerful means of improving learning, not just assessing it."
